Lots of people think that a quick once-over with a flannel or wipe is enough to keep your skin clean and healthy. They couldn't be more wrong!

With Spring being the traditional time of year for a thorough clean and tidy up, why not start by overhauling your natural skincare and cleansing routines this April...

If you want the lovely specialist serums, anti-ageing moistursers, radiance restoring face oils and natural nourishing balms to work effectively, you need to make sure you put them on skin that has been thoroughly (but gently) cleansed.

When people
are selecting skincare products and are conscious of budget (who isn’t in these
hard times), it’s often anti-ageing skincare products that we splurge on –
things like moisturisers, specialist serums and skin saving face oils. Cleansing is something that gets overlooked
and cleansers tend to be the products people often skimp on.

Cleansing
morning and night is key. At night you
need to remove not only make-up but also daily dirt and grime. It’s at night that our skin repairs itself so
make sure you give it a chance by preparing your skin by thoroughly cleansing
it.

In the
morning it’s important to have a fresh, clean canvas for your daily
skincare.

You also
need to select the right cleanser for your skin type.

For me, I
like to use a richer, thicker cleanser at night – something that I can take
time over – to massage in and thoroughly rinse off with an organic muslin face cloths. Rich balms are especially good if
your skin is dull, dry or damaged as they often contain nourishing ingredients
like organic Shea Butter that can soften skin.

When removed with an organic muslin cloth, you’ll very gently polish
your skin, helping to remove dead, dull skin cells. Your skin will have a lovely radiance to
it. Rich balms do take more rinsing off
and it is important that you remove all traces of cleanser – again, that’s why
a cleansing cloth is perfect for this job and I like to follow with a facial
toner.

If you have
oily skin or oily combination skin, you may find that a rich balm is too much
but don’t be put off using oily cleansers – just choose something lighter that
contains ingredients like jojoba oil which is a great natural cleanser. Face
washes are also great – but make sure they don’t contain alcohol or harsh
detergents. These just strip the skin of
its natural oils. Now you may think this is a good thing – getting rid of the
excess oil – but actually it has the reverse effect as our skin just panics and
produces even more oil – so you never get rid of the oil. You need to use products that are mild and
gentle – that will balance your skin’s natural sebum production.

If you wear
lots of eye make-up and aren’t keen on a rich cleansing balm, then make sure
you select an eye make-up remover oil.
This will allow you to gently wipe away your eye make-up without
dragging or pulling the skin around your eyes – which is very delicate and much
thinner than the skin on the rest of our face.
Organic Argan oil is a great ingredient to look for in eye make-up
removers as it is both nourishing and can also restore elasticity to the
skin.

Good natural organic cleansers should last you a long time – you should only need to use a small
amount of cleanser to do a good job. Try
and make time for cleansing – incorporating a facial massage does wonders for radiance
and using a cleansing cloth can really help clear pores. You will also find that investing in a
cleanser will also mean the other products you apply after will work more
efficiently – you should need to use less of these too so actually a good cleanser
is really worth investing in and can save you money and help your skin!

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and you still have time to
organise some lovely things to surprise and delight her on Sunday 10th
March.

From natural skincare to scrummy chocolate, here are my top tips for making your Mum feel extra special next Sunday
from dawn till dusk…

Breakfast…
Whether you live
with your Mum or are faraway, you can still make breakfast special with some lovely
tea. It’s the nation’s favourite drink and for good reason. It also shares some
of the same benefits you can get from certain natural skincare ingredients –
antioxidants! Tea, (like ingredients such as Vitamin A, C, E & Q10 found in
natural and organic skincare products) is high in protective antioxidants that
fight damaging free radicals.

Free
radicals cause damage that can lead to our bodies and skin to age prematurely
and also weaken our immune system. Green
and White Tea are thought to contain particularly high levels of antioxidants,
especially the young leaves. Look for
quality leaf tea for the best benefits (and in my opinion, the best taste
too).

I personally buy my tea online from
Leaf. It might seem a little more expensive, more so than supermarket tea bags, but actually you only need to use a small
amount for a great taste, so it lasts ages and a little goes a long way – another
similarity with high quality natural & organic skincare ranges!

Chocolate treats…
Much like
tea and skincare, chocolate comes in all shapes and forms and most of us have a
favourite. If you’re looking for a tasty
special gift with health and skincare benefits then dark chocolate is the
answer. Like tea and Q10, Dark chocolate is also high in antioxidants.

There are two particular groups of
antioxidants – polyphenols and flavonols, which are found in certain fruits,
seeds, teas and oils, are popular due to their health benefits. Most Mum’s love
a chocolate treat, my Mum is a fan of Rococo’s Dark Chocolate and Cardamom.

I’m
going to be making a pudding using Willie’s Supreme Cacao and I love the fact
that I can give my Mum a chocolate treat, knowing that it’s doing her heart and
her health the world of good! Again, a little goes a long way with quality
chocolate so will last her ages too!

Hands that do dishes….
Many Mum’s spend more time than they’d
rather with their hands in the sink.
Washing Up is never much fun and it can cause do damage to hands,
causing dryness and sometimes irritation.
I’m not suggesting you buy your mum a pair of marigolds this March but
if you’re going to be spending the weekend with her, why not offer to do the
dishes and how about a lovely natural and organic hand cream to keep hands soft
& smooth.

Look for natural hand
creams that contain skin softening Rice Bran Oil, healing Marigold (also known
as Calendula), Marshmallow (not the sweet but the herb which is soothing and
healing and great for treating sore, chapped or irritated skin). A hand cream makes a great gift for Mum’s who
like gardening too!

Favours for your Mum…
If your Mum is short of time and you’re
strapped for cash, how about a box of favours.
Get a cute little gift box and fill it with little favours that she can
cash in throughout the year. It could be
anything from promising to do the dishes, cook her dinner, spend time looking
at old photos, giving her a home manicure or watching her favourite dvd together
or running her a bath. Which brings me
nicely to my final tip...

Bathing Beauty…
Most Mums love to soak in the bath but don’t
always have the time. If that sounds
like your Mum, how about buying her a gorgeous natural bath or body wash that
she can enjoy? A matching rich and nourishing body butter containing organic
Shea or Avocado butter can be used afterwards to keep her skin feeling silky
soft and smooth and smelling gorgeous.

There are plenty of brands to choose, I’d suggest something natural that
uses pure essential oils not synthetic fragrances. My Mum is a fan of spicy smells like Ginger,
Cardamom, Corriander and Lime so the Spice of Life range from my boutique natural skincare brand, is perfect. In fact, my Mum was the inspiration behind the
Spice of Life range – and I blended pure essential oils that bring warming
spicy notes together with zingy zesty citrus smelling oils.

If your Mum prefers something subtler to
relax and unwind then look for essential oils like Lavender, Geranium, Neroli or
Mandarin these essential oils are uplifting and also great for new Mums too. My
Take It Easy range smells contains a blend of pure Neroli & Mandarin
essential oils – wonderful for lifting the spirits and relaxing your lovely
Mum’s soul.

<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Times","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;">The daffodils may be out but the weather here in Somerset is still Wintery - and
there’s no sign of Spring just yet.

Such
weather can play havoc with your skin – so I thought I’d share some quick and
easy to follow top natural skincare tips on how to keep your skin looking great during the cold
weather...

You know
how it is - the wind, rain and freezing temperatures mean that you turn the
heating on inside a few notches higher - but then you have to brave the cold to
go to work, do the school run or walk the dogs. It’s these changes in temperature that can
play havoc with your skin, making it dehydrated, or dryer than normal and
sometimes it can cause flaky patches and our skin can look decidedly dull and
lack-lustre.

What is
needed then is a simple natural skincare routine to help combat the weather -
starting with regular (once or twice a week) exfoliation. Look for natural exfoliators that contain soft
peeling grains – like those made from Jojoba. Exfoliators that contain natural fruit
extracts will also help to gently slough away dead skin cells. Not only will
this rid you of unwanted flaky skin, it will encourage the creation of new skin
cells, which look brighter and healthier.

As well
as a good natural exfoliator, you should also keep your skin hydrated and you
may find that your skin could do with some extra nourishment during the cold
weather. During the day you could try adding a drop or two of a natural faceoils to your daily moistuirser. Look out
for face oils that contain repairing and nourishing natural & organic
ingredients like Rosehip Oil, Argan, Evening Primrose, Macadamia or
Pumpkin. Oils containing natural Vitamin
E, Q10 and Vitamin A can help repair skin and protect against future damage
too.

Make sure
you select a face oil that contains the right oils for your skin. On my website (<span style="font-family: "Times","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;">www.angelalangford.com) you’ll find information about
which products are best for which skin type -
but if you have any doubts at all, just get in touch and I’ll happily
help you identify the best oils for you.

As well
as your face of course, your hands will probably be suffering with the
temperature changes too - especially if you suffer from skin conditions like
psoriasis or eczema, or are prone to chapped hands - this can be particularly troublesome during
the Winter months.

What is needed then is a nourishing, moisturising natural hand creams, such as my In Safe Hands. Packed with natural ingredients to
repair, heal and protect your skin, this nourishing cream is quickly absorbed
into your skin so won’t leave your hands feeling greasy. Pure essential oils of
Petitgrain, Rose Geranium and Lemon will keep your hand smelling fresh too!

Off on holiday, visiting friends or glamping at your local festival?
It’s likely that your natural skincare routine is the last thing on your mind.

Here are my top 3 tips for making sure you come
back from your trip with skin that is radiant, healthy and glowing…

Holidays,
hot weather, camp site living and generally stepping away from our normal
routines can upset your skin. My 3 top tips for maintaining your natural skincare routine are...

Cleansing is Key…
… and it is my number one top tip for keeping your skin clear and in great
condition – no matter what time of year it is or where you happen to be. But
cleansing is often overlooked when we are out of our normal routine but a few
minutes to remove the day’s dirt & grime plus your make-up – can make the
difference between grim skin and great skin! Do not skimp on this – and by that
I mean don’t resort to a quick once over with a cleansing wipe. No... if you
don’t want to take your normal cleansing balm then be sure to pack a rinse of
face wash – ideally one that doesn’t contain Sodium Lauryl Sulphate as this can
strip your skin and also irritate it. Many good natural face washes come in
handy travel sizes too so they take up less room in your case.

Two In One…
An organic toner containing a blend of organic floral waters is just the
thing to pack in your bag. Not only can you use it after cleansing, but you can
also pop it in your beach bag and spray it over your face if you’re feeling hot
and bothered or downright dehydrated. Look for natural toners that contains natural
ingredients like organic Rose, Neroli & Geranium waters as these will both
not just keep your skin hydrated; they will also refresh, calm and balance your
skin. If you are going on a long haul flight keep your toner in your hand
luggage so you can spritz in-flight.

Add moisture…
A good skincare routine may involve using specialist serums, face oils and
moisturisers. If you don’t have room for all three, then opt for a hydrating
daily moisturiser and take sample sizes of your favourite natural serums and
organic face oils. You should find many natural skincare ranges sell essential
travel packs containing a natural cleanser, toner & moisturiser.

If you buy an essential travel pack from Angela Langford
Skincare, you can also request free skincare samples sizes which should last
you up to a week!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2653173747270507713.post-77658799168685842582012-03-20T19:33:00.001+00:002012-03-20T19:35:05.821+00:00Gently Does It

When it comes to cleansing the area around your eyes and choosing the right organic skincare products for you, it really is a question of gently does it.

The skin around our eye area is thinner, delicate and easy to damage, so it is important to look for a gentle oil based natural cleanser that will allow you to wipe away your eye make-up (including waterproof mascara) easily and effortlessly. This will ensure you aren’t dragging and pulling at your delicate skin.

I have written before in my natural skincare blog about the importance of a good cleansing routine – it really is my number one skin care tip! There is no point putting lots of lovely natural & organic anti-ageing creams, specialist serums, face oils and balms on your skin, if your skin isn’t clean.

So for me, the best eye make-up removers are oil based and as well as having cleansing properties; look for eye make-up removers and natural cleansers that have soothing, nourishing and elasticity boosting properties.

Good cleansing oils will include organic Jojoba and Castor oils – these are nature’s mascara magnets as they bind with the eye make-up and, as they aren’t as easily absorbed into your skin as many other organic oils, it means you can wipe away your eye make-up quickly and effectively. When combined with nature’s nourishing & repairing oils that are high in omegas 3, 6 & 9 – you are also protecting the delicate skin around your eyes.

Look for natural and organic eye make-up removers that contain organic Argan and Thistle oils as these can help protect your skin from damage and maintain its elasticity.

So before you go to bed, no matter how late it is and how tired you are, make sure to thoroughly cleanse your skin – and don’t forget your peeps! If you’ve been partying hard, a good eye make-up remover can help improve the appearance of your eyes in the morning.

Now here’s the salesy bit!

If you are looking for a good natural eye make-up remover, then look no further than my very own ‘I Can See Clearly Now’. A favourite among my customers, I Can See Clearly Now contains 97% organically derived raw materials (including 35% organic Argan oil, as well as organic Jojoba, Thistle & Castor oils) and 3% natural vitamin E.

Face oils are a case in point – providing of course your organic skincare routine contains the right oils for you and your skin type.

I have written about face oils before so if you have read my previous skincare blogs, it will come as no surprise to know that I love face oils and according to this month’s (February 2012) Red Magazine, it would seem I am not alone!

Indeed I am in good company – thousands of French Women who also enjoy the benefits that regular use of face oils can bring to your complexion. Regular is a key word here though – if you’re not used to using a face oil, you will notice an instant improvement to your skin’s radiance but in general, it is with continued and regular use of good, organic and natural face oils that you will really notice the long term, anti-ageing benefits. As long as the face oil is correct for your particular skin type and condition and providing that the face oil you use is natural and organic and doesn’t contain mineral oils (that are derived from petroleum based products and so will clog your pores, prevent your skin from breathing and have no skincare benefits).

As previously mentioned, what you need to do is make sure you look for a face oil that suits your own particular skin type and addresses any concerns you have. If your skin is dry, flakey, dehydrated or mature, you should look for products that contain rich and nourishing oils. Whereas if your skin is oilier, prone to acne or breakouts, if you have open pores you need to look for oils that are lighter and will help balance your skin. There are of course a number of oils that suit all skin types – that can nourish yet balance, that are full of anti-ageing properties, rich in omega 3 & 6. Oils like Rosehip, Kiwi Seed, Evening Primrose, Thistle – these suit pretty much all skin types. Then there are oils that are particularly soft and smooth and ideal for sensitive skins – they include oils like Sweet Almond, Apricot Kernel and of course Rosehip – that seems to be most skin’s friend.

Now what is important to remember, is that oil does not equal grease. On the contrary oil can bring equilibrium and balance your skin. It is a common myth that oil breeds oiliness but actually if you are prone to oily skin, oils can actually be your skin’s best friend. Face oils can really help balance your skin and normalize it. Steering clear of oil can actually make the problem of oiliness even worse. Using harsh products to “remove” oil actually makes your skin panic because all the oil is stripped away – so to compensate, your skin produces even more oil. So the oiliness never goes away, it just comes back with vengeance.

Some of the most sophisticated and active face oils contain other oil loving active raw materials – to help fight the signs of ageing, repair damage, prevent further damage, calm inflammations etc. The raw materials to look out for are natural ingredients like Q10, Spilanthes Acmella extract, Vitamins A and E, Bisabolol, Artic Blackcurrant extract to name but a few.

What’s not to love about Face Oils? They have so many benefits – from improving suppleness, protecting your skin from environmental damage, preventing water loss and therefore combating dryness, bringing balance to your skin, increasing the rate at which healthy new skin cells renew themselves and generally improving skin tone and radiance.

Still not convinced? There’s only one thing for it, and that is to try one out before you buy.

Going from central-heated homes and offices out into the cold winter weather can send our skin into a state of confusion - so here are my four top skincare tips for keeping your skin glowing and gorgeous this Winter.

1. Make Your Winter A Balmy One...
Balms are great for protecting our skin during the winter. They can nourish, smooth, soften and heal skin and are generally a lot richer than a cream. Look for natural balms that contain natural oils like organic Avocado, Pumpkin, Argan, Evening Primrose and Macadamia Nut Oils. These are all very nourishing and act a bit like a warming blanket. They comfort our skin, heal it, nurture and protect it.

Balms come in various guises – as you would find in some of the best organic skincare products, in my range I have a lovely cleansing balm called 'Clean Sweep'. It is not only a wonderfully effective cleanser, it will also leave your skin feeling softer, smoother and brighter – helping to restore your skin’s natural radiance.

I also have a very rich and nourishing night balm called 'Rest and Regenerate' – which is great for repairing damage and as its name suggests, regenerating tired, dull and damaged skin. It is perfect for ridding your skin of any flakiness – a common symptom of winter weather, particularly if you spend time outside. Used nightly, you’ll find your skin looks brighter, radiant and glowing.

2. Scrub, scrub, scrub...

Dull, dry and flaky skin is not a good look but it’s a common look for skin during the Winter. However, with regular exfoliation you will ensure dullness is a thing of the past. A mild but highly effective natural exfoliators will slough off dead, dull, flaky skin cells and will increase the rate of new skin cells. Your skin will look brighter and more radiant.

Look for products that contain natural fruit enzymes and fruit acids (on the label these will appear as AHA and stand for Alpha Hydroxy Acids) as these are mild and gentle but highly effective. Used once or twice a week, your skin will thank you for it! My natural and organic exfoliator is called 'Scrub Up' and is great for almost all skin types.

3. Keep Your Skin Hydrated...
Going from the cold and often harsh outdoor weather into a hot heated house can confuse our skin. It’s important to keep it hydrated and fresh – day and night. Hydration comes from using a daily natural and organic moisturiser like 'Thirsty Work' or 'Balancing Act' but it also comes in the form of natural and organic skin tonics and toners.

These natural toners can be used to spritz over your skin after you have cleansed and can also be used throughout the day to top up levels of hydration. Look for tonics and toners that are free from alcohol as these can dry out the skin. 'Freshen Up' is a lovely floral toner and tonic that can be used day and night to keep your skin hydrated at all times.

4. Treat Your Skin this Winter...

I have combined three of my key natural and organic skincare products into a fabulous Christmas gift pack to bring your skin a Gorgeous Glow this winter. Containing 'Scrub Up', 'Freshen Up' and 'Rest and Regenerate' this organic gift set comes beautifully packaged and also includes a luxuriously lovely organic muslin face cloth - plus you save over 20% off the normal price for a limited time!

So make the most of Winter and keep your skin looking and feeling gorgeous.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2653173747270507713.post-6544509455445236872011-11-01T11:25:00.001+00:002011-11-01T11:26:08.689+00:00Pumpkins Are For Life, Not Just Halloween

As the witching hour comes and goes for another year, it is true to say that we associate Pumpkins with all things Halloween.

But did you know that the seeds are also an important raw material for our skin - and this wonderful oil is often found in some of the best anti-ageing organic skincare products?

At this time of year, there is nothing better than buying a pumpkin (or growing one) and carving out their hard and knobbly skin, to make bewitchingly spooky faces. The orange flesh makes a lovely warming Halloween soup or sweet pie; the seeds are also a tasty and healthy snack. But many of the best organic skin care products also contain organic Pumpkin Seed Oil, as it is especially beneficial for dry skins, mature skin, damaged skin and skin that is losing its elasticity.

Pumpkin Seed Oil, which can be found in many natural face oils on the market, is rich in vitamins and minerals including Vitamin A, Beta-Carotene, Vitamin B, Potassium, Magnesium and of significant interest, it is also high in Zinc. It is rich in essential fatty acids – omegas 3, 6 and 9 and so its benefits in organic skincare are numerous. These essential fatty acids help keep our skin soft, supple and can help improve elasticity. They can also help repair damaged skin and have regenerating properties.

Due to Pumpkin’s high level of zinc, the oil has a lifting effect and can really improve your skin’s elasticity especially when it is combined with Mullein – another of nature’s wrinkle warriors. Mullein can help hydrated our skin and has good moisturising properties and above all, it contains high levels of elastin so when both these raw materials are used together, they can really help improve our skin’s elasticity.

This is why I use this bewitchingly beautiful combination of raw materials in my natural anti-ageing serum, 'A Little Lift' - as well as in one of my natural night balms, 'Rest & Regenerate'.

So be sure to include in your skincare routine this Halloween products that are rich in Pumpkin Seed Oil. And remember, Pumpkins are for life, not just for Halloween… make them part of your daily natural and organic skincare routine forever.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2653173747270507713.post-86372467942567486762011-08-26T12:47:00.007+01:002011-08-26T13:13:33.037+01:00Amazing Argan Oil

If you’ve holidayed in Morocco, you may have seen goats happily clambering up the indigenous Argan Tree and, perhaps even unknowingly, you’ll have enjoyed eating it too - introducing amazing Argan Oil!

Another of nature’s wonder raw materials, Argan Oil has both dietary health and organic skincare benefits and is one of those natural ingredients that should grace both our kitchen and our bathroom shelves.

It is used as liberally in Moroccan cooking as Olive Oil is used in Italy, France & Spain – and is equally delicious, nourishing and contains lots of lovely health benefits too! Its high natural Vitamin E contentmeans it can help protect the body against heart disease& can help lower cholesterol; and thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, it can also ease the symptoms of arthritis and rheumatism.

As well as numerous health benefits, its nutty taste means it tastes delicious and it makes a lovely salad dressing and is lovely when drizzled over grilled vegetables. But not only should you add a bottle of Organic Argan oil to your kitchen cupboard, you should also make sure your natural skincare bathroom shelf contains products that contain this amazing natural and organic raw material and here’s why…

Argan Oil (or ArganiaSpinosa as you’ll see it on a skincare list of natural & organic ingredients) has been used for centuries by Moroccan women who use it to soothe & nourish their skin and hair. More recently its anti-ageing properties have been well documented as it can help reduce the appearance of fine lines, strengthen our skin’s elasticity and improve overall radiance. These anti-ageing properties are due to the oil being rich in essential fatty acids (Omega 6 & 9) & antioxidants.

I’ve written before about the importance of Omega Oils 3, 6 & 9 in skincare and this can really help prevent our skin from losing moisture; Omega 6 helps keep skin supple, soft & helps maintain your skin’s elasticity. Its high levels of naturally occurring Vitamin E act as an important antioxidant that help protect the skin against harmful environmental factors (often referred to as ‘harmful free radicals’) that can cause our skin to age prematurely.

It’s a very soft oil that is mild and gentle and therefore suitable for use on sensitive skin. Its anti-inflammatory properties mean that topical application of products containing Natural and Organic Argan Oil, can help calm, sooth and treat inflamed, red and irritated skin. Its anti-inflammatory properties also make it an important natural raw material for use in organic body creams, lotions and massage oils as it can help reduce pain & swelling and simultaneously stimulates circulation; so it’s great for helping to relieve things like stiff joints, sore muscles and swellings. These anti-inflammatory properties combined with Argan oil’s softness and suitability for use on sensitive skins; make it an ideal natural and organic ingredient for face oils and eye creams.

With all these skincare and health benefits, it will come as no surprise to learn that Organic Argan oil graces the shelves of both my kitchen and my natural skincare laboratory – which is why it is an essential ingredient in my Repair & Renew natural face oil, Bright Eyes organic eye cream; and my Grilled Aubergine and Feta Cous Cous Salad!

Grilled Aubergine and Feta Cous Cous Salad
I thought I’d share my recipe with you – it’s actually less of a recipe and more like throwing together some lovely fresh ingredients which is why the quantities are quite vague – just add the items to suit your taste buds!

For the Cous Cous...

150gms cous cous
Juice of 2, 3 or 4 lemons
Small bunch of spring onions
Bunch of Fresh mint
Bunch of Fresh parsley
Packet of Feta Cheese (organic if possible)
Some lovely black or green olives
Some lovely ripe organic tomatoes

Grilled Aubergine slices...

A good glug of Organic Argan Oil
Sea Salt Flakes
Freshly Ground Black Pepper
Cayenne Pepper

Tip the cous cous into a bowl and squeeze the lemon juice over the cous cous and leave the grains to swell for about 30 – 45 minutes. In the meantime roughly chop the spring onions, parsley, mint and tomatoes and olives. Slice the augergines lengthways and drizzle with oil and cook on a hot griddled pan.

Once the cous cous has swollen, fluff up the grains with a fork to separate them. Add the chopped herbs, vegetables & olives. Crumble in enough Feta to suit your taste, season with salt (you won’t need much as the Feta is quite salty), black pepper and a pinch of Cayenne. Add a glug of Argan Oil and mix well.

Serve with the grilled Aubergine slices – delicious!

But as we all know, too much sun can be very bad for our skin. So here are some natural skin care saviours to help keep your skin looking and feeling fresh in the heat.

1. Keep Hydrated from the inside and out...

Drink plenty of fresh water and make sure you use natural skincare products that contain quenching H20. Natural toners that don’t contain alcohol can double up as a facial freshener in the summer. I keep a bottle of Rose, Geranium and Neroli Water natural toner in my handbag and spritz it over my face and the back of my neck throughout the day. Not only does it provide a hydrating skincare boost, but it also awakens my senses and helps counteract mid-afternoon energy slumps.

2. Look out for natural skincare products that contain Hyaluronic Acid...

This amazing natural raw material can hold a thousand times its own weight in water and can really help hydrate our skin and give it a youthful plumpness. This amazing natural raw material has rightly received lots of positive press and back in August last year I wrote a skincare blog entry all about one of my favourite natural raw materials.

3. Exfoliate all year round….

Some people think we only need to do this during the winter months but it is important to use a mild and gentle (but effective) natural exfoliator all year round. Dead, dull skin is not confined to the winter months – it can occur at any time of the year and using natural exfoliators can help slough off those dead, dull and flaky skin cells. Using products that contain gentle fruit extracts like Papaya and Alpha Hydroxy Acids (often referred as AHA’s) can also speed up the renewal of healthy new skin cells. Not only does exfoliation slough of dead skin, but it can help other hydrating serums and moisturising creams to be absorbed more effectively into the skin. All this helps keep our skin looking and feeling more hydrated and healthier.

4. You might want to change your routine slightly during the summer...

In the heat, richer creams can sometimes seem too heavy (especially during the day). If you haven’t tried a natural face serum and face oil combination yet, now might be just the time to do so. A serum and natural face oils can work wonders as these two products can deliver really high levels of active raw materials and because they are very quickly absorbed, your skin will feel light and fresh, yet perfectly hydrated.

5. Protect your skin from the sun and keep wrinkles at bay...

Make sure you use a specific sun protector over your natural moisturiser, serum or face oil – not instead of! A sun protector should be exactly that – something that contains high level protection against UVA and UVB damage. This is another big subject that I will cover in a separate blog but for the moment, remember to use a sun protection over and above your normal hydrating and anti-ageing daily skincare routine.

6. Don’t leave your skincare routine at home!

It’s holiday time and many of us are lucky to pack a suitcase and spend some time away from home – whether it’s for a fortnight in the sun, a weekend visiting loved ones or frolicking at a festival. Wherever you are off to, make sure you don’t leave your good organic skincare routine at home! It may only be for a short time, but keeping up your daily three step routine is key: cleanse, tone and moisturise twice a day. Many natural skincare companies make this easy by offering travel sizes of these three skincare essentials - so make sure you don’t leave home without yours this summer! Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2653173747270507713.post-79048169600187102982011-05-19T16:33:00.000+01:002011-05-19T16:33:14.076+01:00Oily Skin? Stay Balanced and Beautiful...

When you have oily skin there’s always a tendency to select oil-free harsh organic skincare products that can strip your skin of its oiliness. Conversely, this can actually just make the oiliness even worse.

So here are my three top tips for treating the oiliness and bringing some balance to your complexion.

Gently Does It!

Using harsh cleansing products just tricks your skin into a false sense of security. Stripping your skin of its natural oils in the hope it will stop your skin producing excess oil just doesn’t work – it can be counter- productive and makes your skin panic and it just produces even more oil –so the oiliness will never go away. Harsh products can also irritate your skin too!

The solution is to use mild and gentle natural skincare products that will help balance your skin and control the oiliness without stripping it. Avoid cleansers and toners that contain alcohol and don’t automatically select oil free cleansers. Natural cleansers that contain Organic Jojoba Oil are great – Jojoba oil can help unclog pores and it binds with the dirt and grime leaving your pores clean but not stripped!

Make Friends with Oil!

Oil is not oily skin’s enemy – on the contrary natural and organic face oils can actually be your oily skin’s best friend. The trick is to use natural skin care products that contain the “right” oils. So what are the right the oils and which ones should you avoid? In a nutshell look out for oils that are thinner and are absorbed quickly into your skin.

Five of my favourite organic and natural oils that balance oiliness are...

Thistle

Rosehip

Chia Seed

Kiwi Seed

Evening Primrose

As well as balancing they also contain anti-ageing & rejuvenating properties so can help keep the signs of ageing at bay – what a bonus! Heavier, richer oils tend to be better for treating drier skins – and very thick Organic oils & vegetable fats like Organic Macadamia & Organic Shea Butter should be avoided if you have oily skin.

If you use the right kind of organic and natural face oils every day you’ll find that your skin will become more balanced. You won’t find your skin gets oilier nor will it feel greasy or bring you out in spots. On the contrary products like Balanced & Beautiful can help balance your skin, help keep away the signs of ageing and bring radiance to your skin.

For best results, use a natural and organic face oil in conjunction with a natural specialist skin serum and face oils are generally great for using during the day and at night. Try something like Balanced & Beautiful and prepare to be amazed by the results of beautifully balanced , radiant skin.

Use Naturally Balancing Actives

There’s a little known Alpine Plant extract called Epilobium Fleischeriwhich contains high levels of a tannin called Oenethin B – this is a very useful naturally active raw material that helps to regulate sebum production in human skin, reducing the size of pores and balancing oily looking skin. I use this alpine plant extract in my natural face product Balancing Act which is a lovely lightweight daily moisturiser that is perfect for balancing oily and combination skin types – whilst keeping the signs of ageing away.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2653173747270507713.post-13422947459928438622011-04-06T12:47:00.000+01:002011-04-06T12:47:23.491+01:00Brightening Your Skin on a Bright Spring Day

It feels like Spring has finally sprung, with new life apparent all around. So if your skin has that wintery, lack-lustre look about it, it’s time to brush up your organic skin care regime and bring back radiance with some gentle but effective exfoliation.

Facial exfoliation, using natural exfoliators can really help restore your skin’s natural radiance. It helps slough off dead, dull skin – including dry and flaky patches that you might be prone to especially in Winter and it can also speed up the renewal of healthy, brighter, new skin cells. Radiance is restored and you’ll be left with a gorgeous glow about you.

Here are three radiance restoring exfoliation tips...

1. Gently Does It…
It’s important not to use harsh exfoliators – as these can damage your skin. A lot of people think that natural scrubs need to be quite rough and hard. Whilst crushed ground nut shells are great for using on your body, they can be a bit too harsh for your face. Instead look for natural ingredients such as Jojoba Peeling grains, as these are rounded and smooth so they won’t irritate your skin.

2. Fruit is Fab…
It’s tasty, full of vitamins and we all know it should be part of our five a day. Fruit is also fab for our faces too! Look out for natural skincare products that contain Natural Fruit Acids – also known as Alpha Hydroxy Acids or AHA’s. These fruit acids break down dead and dull skin cells and increase the rate of cell renewal – skin will look softer and smoother and more even. Papaya extract is another brilliant fruit bowl addition – it helps balance oily skin and exfoliates dry skin. Look for natural skincare products that contain Papaya (listed as Carica Papaya on the ingredients list).

3. Slough off whilst you sleep…
Natural Vitamin E is one of nature’s anti-oxidants. Oxidisation can cause damage and signs of ageing to our skin so it’s important to counteract this damage by using anti-oxidants in our natural skincare routines like natural Vitamin E. Now when you use natural Vitamin E in high doses, it acts a little bit like a peeling or exfoliating agent as it speeds up the renewal of healthy new skin cells and boosts radiance. Look for organic skincare products that contain high levels of natural Vitamin E and when you use them over night, you’ll find your skin is more radiant and brighter in the morning.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2653173747270507713.post-26818365266062697792011-02-17T23:05:00.004+00:002011-02-17T23:07:51.288+00:00Knowing Your Organic Skincare No Nos

When I get the chance to blog about all things organic skincare, I like to talk about what we should be doing to look after our skin - whether that be what we should eat, what we should drink (or not!) or how to make sure we carry out a proper daily skincare routine.

But whilst there are plenty of beautiful natural and organic raw materials that can help our skin, there are plenty more that we should avoid. Here's three...
Reading an ingredients list is a tricky business these days. Knowing what’s bad (and why it's bad) can be a minefield for many, but still there are many skincare companies out there that list the legal INCI names - but fail to provide the plain English translation for them.

It’s easy to list both, therefore for me it has always been hard to understand why a skincare company wouldn’t want to make things simple and easily understandable for their customers? It is certainly something I have tried to do when formulating and making my organic skincare range.

There are lots of ingredients that I personally don’t use in my formulas because I wouldn’t want to put them on my own skin, so I wouldn’t expect my customers to either. The list of skincare baddies is a lot longer than three, so I’ll be writing about this more in the future; but these three ingredients are found all too often within some of the most popular products on sale today...

1. Parabens...

These are a group of preservatives that have received pretty bad press over the last few years. They are widely used to protect products from a range of bacteria, moulds, fungi and yeasts but there are several different parabens to look for and they often appear on the list of ingredients as: butylparaben, ethylparaben, isobutylparaben, methlyparaben and propylparaben.

Their bad press is due to the fact that British doctors found parabens in breast cancer tumors and in addition to this, Parabens can also mimic estrogen. This is a naturally occurring hormone that has been known to play a role in the development of breast cancer.

Whilst there is still debate and uncertainty about their safety levels, I personally think it’s wiser to avoid Parabens and use an alternative preservative system. After all, there are so many other natural options that keep our organic creams free from fungi, moulds, bacteria and yeasts.

2. Sodium Lauryl Sulphate...

This is possibly one of the most well known “don’t use me” skin care ingredients around. Many bottles of shampoos, shower gels, body washes, hand washes or washing up detergents are likely to feature it.

Whilst it may have good cleansing properties, the negative aspect of this ingredient is that it is very aggressive and harsh. This means that on greasy dishes, it’s a very effective cleanser but it’s too harsh for our rather more delicate skin – which is why it often causes irritation and why you won’t find it in my natural skincare range.

3. Kathon CG...

Most people probably haven’t heard of this, but if you look on a list of ingredients its INCI name is Methyl chloroisothiazolinone and Methyl isothiazolinone. It is another common preservative that is used to prevent bacteria and fungi growing in products.

Whilst the reason for it being used is perfectly legitimate, but I suspect when you find out what else it’s used in, you won’t want to put it on your skin - Kathon CG is registered as a Class 2 fungicide and is used in anti-freeze for cars and a wood preservative.

So you can safely say it’s a bit strong!

I am reliably informed that many skincare companies use it to levels of 10 – 20% and it is known to be one of the most common causes of allergic reactions and causes of sensitivity in skin care products. Common side effects iclude redness, blisters, rashes, itchiness, swelling & peeling of the skin.

The problem with Kathon CG is that it is known and listed as many different things on ingredients lists – which makes it difficult to identify - the main examples of names are Actizide AC and Euxyl K 100.

So if you are looking for sensitive skin products, don't be fooled by the latin - plain English is always best.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2653173747270507713.post-38330486174161064922011-02-02T23:13:00.000+00:002011-02-02T23:13:47.148+00:00Five Reasons To Keep The Faith This Feb

So it is February already and whilst you might have had high hopes to improve your organic skincare routine and New Year resolutions in general - let's face it... we all need a bit of help in keeping our promises.

So rather than beat yourself up about why you have raided the chocolate drawer again, or helped yourself to that extra glass of red, check out five top tips to help get your healthy lifestyle back on track!

1. Sleep...
I love my sleep - I really do. But sometimes whether it is work, play or watching that late night movie, you become deprived of sleep to the point your body starts to scream at you! Sleep is essential for mental well being and keeping your body in physical shape - so start your evening natural skin care routine that little bit earlier each night and try to get some shut eye!

2. Cut down on the booze...
Lots of us love to have a glass of wine with a meal, or go out with friends and wind down with a well deserved drink. But cutting back on the booze will not only reduce your calorie intake, it will also help your body recover and rest that little bit better.

3. You are what you eat...
Old Gillian Mac may have had a tough time in the jungle towards the end of 2010, but her adage remains true to this day. As with your natural skin care products, you should look to increase your intake of Omega oils, as well as drinking plenty of water.

4. Exercise...
That tired sluggish feeling that we all get from time to time may be due to a lot of things, but the last thing you want to do is go to the gym or out for a brisk walk, right? Some experts say that this is exactly the time you should go, as exercise is not only great for your body, it envigorates your mind and with a bit of time, helps combat the tiredness that is stopping you go in the first place.

5. Choosing the right organic beauty products...
You've sorted your insides, you've got back on to the treadmill and you get to bed earlier - but to complete the set you need to look after your skin. A good daily skin care routine, using organic creams and natural face serums will help your skin get back to it's best. Always read the label and go for organic products like those from my Angela Langford range, that contain no parabens, petrochemicals or synthetic fragrances.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2653173747270507713.post-40257208852531480012011-01-05T21:26:00.005+00:002011-01-05T22:15:22.395+00:00Resolve Yourself To A Natural Skin Care Regime

It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new year and your skin is feeling good!

Well it would be if you were to follow a few simple organic skin care resolutions, that should stand you -and your beautiful skin - in good stead for the rest of 2011 and beyond....

1. Never Go To Bed With MAKE-UP on!
We all know it but let’s be honest, most of us have done this at some time (you know that feeling when you’re just too tired to be bothered – all you want is to climb into bed and close your eyes) well in 2011 fight this urge and make a resolution not to.

I know you’re probably wondering if it can really do that much harm - well the answer to that is simple: Yes it can. In my book it’s the number one skin sin. It’s at night whilst we’re resting our bodies, minds & souls that our skin can also really take some essential time to rest & regenerate. But in order to do so properly it needs a natural skincare regime that thoroughly cleans of the day’s dirt, grime & pollution as well as removed of all make-up. Cleansing your skin and applying a nourishing skin treat before bed really should be top of your skin resolutions in 2011.

2. Keep Hydrated inside and out…
We can do this by drinking plenty of water, unsweetened juice and fruit teas and cutting back on alcohol, caffeine, sugary drinks and drinks that use artificial sweeteners. Keep your skin hydrated by using serums, natural face oils & creams that use natural and organic raw materials and ingredients.

Look for natural skin care products that use Hyaluronic Acid – this acts like a sponge and really helps keep your skin hydrated – and it can help it look plumper and give it the volume associated with younger skin.

3. Don’t crash diet...
Okay so we may all be guilty of a little over indulgence over the festive period and our waistbands might be feeling the pinch but crash dieting isn’t the answer. Not only can crash dieting play havoc with our metabolic rates but it can also play havoc with our skin.

Not eating properly can result in all sorts of skin problems – spots, breakouts, flaky, dull and lack-lustre complexions to name but a few. But also crash dieting can make the skin (particularly on our face) lose its youthful volume and skin can sag, resulting in skin that looks haggered and older than its true age.

Daily exercise combined with sensible eating with plenty of fresh fruit & vegetables, pulses, nuts, lean protein, healthy unsaturated fats including foods high in Omega 3 & 6 can do wonders for our radiance as well as our waists.

4. Keep things natural…
As a nation we are taking more interest and care over our diet as we now become more aware of the benefits of healthy eating. We are getting used to reading food labels – avoiding trans-fatty acids, saturated fat, too much salt, artificial flavours & colours and avoiding foods with too many chemicals. Equally people are becoming more aware of the products they use on their skin and there are now more natural and organic skincare options available that deliver on results.

The best natural and organic skincare brands use active natural and organic raw materials that can really help fight the signs of ageing and keep our skin looking younger, smoother, healthier and radiant and natural skincare products avoid synthetic and chemically produced raw materials that can often irritate our skin. Look for natural skincare products that are free from Parabens, harsh detergents like Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, Petrochemicals (found in a lot of skincare ranges), synthetic perfume & colour and look for natural alternatives – like my range!

The Angela Langford range uses natural and organic active raw materials and plenty of them. The other bonus is that my range is cruelty free – none of the products are tested on animals and they are also all suitable for vegetarians.

Whether your skin is chapped, sore from shaving, red and inflamed or just super sensitive, here are three natural and organic soothing raw materials that will help calm your skin.
Super Seabuckthorn...

The latin name for this amazing natural raw material is Hippophae rhamnoides so look out for this name in the list of ingredients!

The berries of Sea Buckthorn are a vivid Orange colour and the oil extract often gives natural skincare products a wonderful orange colour – but don’t worry, it won’t make you look like you’ve just been tangoed! The berries are natural source of Vitamins A, C & E (which are important for good health and good skincare) and are high in essential fatty acids (another vital component for good, healthy skin).

So what is so special about Sea Buckthorn? Well for starters it’s an incredibly versatile natural raw material and has so many benefits for our skin. It’s a bit like a super-food equivalent for your face! So where to start with the benefits?

It is healing, repairing, calming, rejuvenating and protecting. It is high in anti-oxidants which means that it protects your skin against harmful elements founds in our environment (pollution, smoke, UV rays etc). It can heal skin from rashes, sores and burns. It calms red, inflamed and irritated skin. It can help rejuvenate the skin and protect it from further damage which can lead to ageing. It’s a wonderful natural raw material that I use in Save our Skin soothing & calming after-shave serum and it will play a starring role in my natural and organic after-sun balm that is currently in development.

Calming Calendula...
Calendula comes from the marvellous Marigold. It comes in many guises – an oil, an essential oil, a tincture, infusion & floral water and it really is one of nature’s calmers. It soothes inflamed, red skin and can really help calm rashes – which makes it particularly useful in natural shaving and after-shave products like Save Our Skin. It can also help heal broken, cracked and chapped skin – which is why it features in my natural hand cream, In Safe Hands.

Cooling Chamomile...
Chamomile is one of the best known natural raw materials. It’s soothing and calming (which is why Chamomile tea is recommended as a night time tea) but it’s also cooling and an anti-inflammatory. Like Calendula, it comes in many guises – essential oils, infusions, extracts and floral waters. A derivative of Chamomile, Bisabolol is an anti-irritant and an anti-inflammatory and is often used to speed up the healing process in skincare. Due to its soothing and calming properties it’s ideal for sensitive skin and skin that is inflamed, sore or easily irritated which is why I use it in Save Our Skin soothing after-shave serum as it really helps calm the skin.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2653173747270507713.post-31774145276926216422010-11-21T23:44:00.009+00:002010-11-21T23:50:53.463+00:00Introduce Your Man To Organic Skincare

If you’re a Man looking for the right organic skincare (or a woman buying for their son, husband, boyfriend, uncle, nephew, friend or lover) you'll want to know what ingredients you should look out for and what should you be wary of.

So do Men need different products to Women – or can we share our bathroom cabinets and shelves?

Good natural skin care is no longer reserved solely for women. Men’s skincare sales are on the rise as more and more realize how important it is to look after their skin. Increasingly, Men are starting to question the products they are using and they are looking for more natural men's skincare solutions and rightly so, because reactions to synthetic & chemical ingredients are on the increase.

Well just with all skincare, there are some ingredients I personally like to stay clear of (see my blog on this subject) but the top traitors for Men & Women’s skin (in my opinion) are petrochemicals, parabens, harsh detergents like Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, synthetic colours and synthetic fragrances. All these things can cause irritation and bad reactions and now we have so much choice available to us and a wealth of beautiful, effective natural raw materials - personally I avoid products that use these ingredients and I don’t use them in my own natural skincare formulations either.

There are lots of mens skincare brands that produce ranges especially for Men. Sometimes the actual products in the ranges are identical to the Women’s range – but they are in different packaging. Sometimes the fragrances are different and sometimes the products are formulated specifically for Men – for example Shaving products.

With a few exceptions, it’s absolutely fine for Men and Women to use the same skincare products. The important factor is to choose products that are suitable for your (or the man you are buying for) skin. If your skin is on the dry side look for products that are rich and hydrating (ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid, Evening Primrose oil, Avocado oil, Argan oil are good) – products like Thirsty Work moisturiser and Repair & Renew face oil are perfect.

If you have oilier skin look for lighter products that will balance your skin’s natural sebum production and oils high in Omega 3 & 6 (for example thistle, rosehip, kiwi & Chia Seed Oils are all good).

Balancing Act is a lightweight anti-ageing moisturiser that will help fight the signs of ageing and keep wrinkles at bay but it will also help balance the oiliness in your skin thanks to a special alpine plant extract.

Men shouldn’t shy away from cleansing their skin – okay so you might not need to remove make-up but your skin still gets dirty and removing daily grime and dirt is an essential part of Mens’ skincare. There’s little point in investing in a good moisturiser, serum or oil and applying it to dirty skin.

Many of my male customers prefer a wash off cleanser that they can use in the shower. A non-foaming face wash like Sweet Cheeks is ideal as it removes daily dirt and grime without stripping the skin and leaving it feeling dry and tight. It’s great for all skin types, is quick and easy to use and is mild enough to be used every day.

A twice weekly exfoliator will help keep your skin looking bright and healthy and it also helps to unblock pores. If you have dull skin look for products that will brighten your complexion. Scrub Up contains natural fruit acids (Alpha Hydroxy Acids or AHAs) that are good at sloughing off dead dull skin and will encourage the production of healthy new skin cells.

Of course there is one element of skincare that is exclusive for Men and that is facial shaving. Shaving can really irritate the skin and leave it feeling raw, delicate, sore and irritated. Select a soothing after shave serum to calm down your skin. Natural anti-inflammatories include comfrey, chamomile, calendula & Seabuckthorn.

These natural raw materials will help calm down redness, sooth irritations and heal shaving nicks. Seabuckthorn is a particularly versatile raw material that plays a leading role in Save Our Skin after shave serum – it soothes, heals calms, repairs, and it’s also regenerating.

So all in all, look for products that contain natural and organic raw materials, avoid synthetic and petroleum based products and feel free to share your bathroom cabinet with a Woman – or make your products last a little longer by saving it all for yourself!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2653173747270507713.post-55260672340630417362010-11-08T12:35:00.000+00:002010-11-08T12:35:11.403+00:00Five Fixes For a Fab Facial

Who doesn’t love a good massage to relax, release tension, tone, detoxify? Aching limbs, shoulder stress and aches and pains can be pummelled away and our body can feel like it’s floating in the air.

But massage isn’t just good for our back, neck, shoulders, limbs and soul - it should be included in your organic skincare routine, as it’s fab for your face too!

Facial massage can help relieve tension, improve blood and lymph circulation, can also improve muscle tone and elasticity and almost have a lifting effect – whilst giving your face a youthful and pink glow. Our faces contain lots of small muscles and blood vessels and capillaries that are very delicate – so it’s very important that we use gentle movements and if you have very sensitive skin or thread veins, use very gentle strokes.

As we age our skin loses its elasticity, muscle tone and can start to sag. It’s therefore important that all movements are upward – so we don’t pull our skin down any further!

The other benefit of facial massage is that you can DIY – although it’s always more relaxing if you can get someone to do this for you!

I try to incorporate a facial massage into my natural skin care regime once a week; preferably in the evening when I’m in the bath enjoying a relaxing soak or when I’m in bed and just before I drift off to sleep – infact it can help send you off! It’s easier than you think to DIY – work all over your face using tapping and sweeping strokes and always make sure your hands are clean.

It’s important to select high quality natural and organic skincare products to massage into your skin that suit your particular skin type. In my opinion natural face oils and balms are best as they lubricate the skin and are easily absorbed. When you massage at night you get the added benefit of allowing the oils to continue working whilst you are resting. You’ll wake up with skin that looks smoother, radiant and well rested (even if you haven’t actually had a good night sleep you’ll look like you have – but of course, a good night’s sleep can also help keep your skin looking skin – it’s not called Beauty Sleep for nothing!)

Five Musts for Massage...

1. Always use upward movements – never pull or drag your skin down – we’re aiming to “lift” not to “sag”

2. Use gentle, light tapping movements around your gentle eye area. Use the tip of your index finger and gently tap from the outside to the inside and back again (and repeat several times) – this can help reduce puffiness without (once again) dragging down this highly delicate area.

3. Spend at least 5 minutes on your facial massage – and no longer than 20 minutes

4. Don’t forget your neck and chest area. We often tend to focus on our face but our necks and chest will also benefit from gentle massage. As with your face, the same rules apply – upwards and onwards and no dragging downwards!

5. For best results use natural face oils or natural balms that suits your skin type – if you have dry, mature or dehydrated skin look for natural and organic skin care products that nourish and repair – like organic Argan, Rosehip, Avocado and Macadamia . If you have oily or combination skin use light oils that are quickly absorbed and can help balance your skin – like Rosehip & Thistle. Products that contain organic Rosehip and Kiwi seed oils are brilliant for all skin types and are great for fighting the signs of ageing thanks to their fantastic rejuvenating properties.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2653173747270507713.post-43624156496512297732010-10-29T12:09:00.005+01:002010-11-08T20:50:27.543+00:00Snuggle Up To Organic Skincare

The clocks have gone back and for me, it’s a real sign that Autumn is out and Winter is well and truly upon us. As the seasons change so do our wardrobes but it’s also worth giving your natural skin care routine an overhaul as the cold weather sets in.

Winter weather can play havoc on our skin as we are faced with going from artificial central heating out into the cold. These extremes of temperature mean our skin needs some extra TLC within your organic skincare regime to avoid our skin looking dull, dry & flaky.

Here are my top tips for keeping your skin looking wonderful this Winter.

Slough off and Scrub Up…

Gentle exfoliation can really help restore radiance to dull skin. If your skin is looking decidedly lack-lustre, look out for natural exfoliators that contain Natural Fruit Acids (known as Alpha Hydroxy Acids or AHAs) and other fruit extracts.

These natural raw materials work by sloughing off dead, dull, dry skin cells and speed up the renewal of healthy new skin cells. The inclusion of a gentle exfoliating grain will help this process but look for natural skin care products that contain gentle exfoliating agents like Jojoba Peeling Grains and avoid things like Walnut pieces, as these can drag and tear the skin on your face (although they are fine to use on your body).

Although exfoliation is useful at all times of the year, if you haven’t tried one before and have started to notice your skin looking dull and gloomy, Winter is the perfect time to Scrub Up on a grey day.

Feed Your Face (not just your stomach)….

My first passion is making and consuming natural skincare products but in a very close second place comes food - and in Winter that can only mean one thing for me – comforting, nourishing, aromatic & tasty winter warmers!

But it’s not just your appetite that needs feeding – it’s also your face. Look for products that nourish, repair and heal. Rich organic oils like Avocado, Argan& Macadamia feed your skin. Rosehip oil is a natural wrinkle warrior and helps restore skin’s elasticity. Pumpkin is rich in zinc and gives this oil a lifting effect and Mullein contains elastin.

It’s best to use really rich products like nourishing balms at night: whilst your skin is resting the rich nourishing balms can do their work to regenerate, nourish and feed your skin. You’ll wake up with skin that looks glowing, radiant and healthy. Night balms like Rest & Regenerate are the perfect midnight feast for faces: you’ll wake up with skin that looks nourished and well fed, ready to face that wintery weather!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2653173747270507713.post-33770601662225458972010-10-25T12:00:00.006+01:002010-10-25T12:00:02.304+01:00Organic Skincare By Any Other Name...

Roses conjure up so many images – the quintessential English garden flower; the florists favourite - the lovers bunch of red roses, the friends bunch of yellow.

They are delicate, precious, expensive and smell exquisite.

It may take a lot of rose petals to make just a drop of Rose essential oil – making it one of the most expensive essential oils you can buy - but they are also a organic skincare dream product.

Roses have been used and written about for centuries. They have been used by the Greeks, the Persians, the Egyptians, the Romans and today, they still remain a key ingredient in some of the most expensive and famous perfumes.

Roses work on a physical and emotional level and across different cultures. In Ayurvedic medicine roses are cooling and used to treat tiredness, muscular aches and pains, excessive heat, pimples, digestive problems to name but a few. In the West it has been used as a tonic for the liver, heart and stomach.

And when it comes to natural skin care, roses mean more than romance…

The flowers and buds are used to produce essential oils, waters and infusions. Roses are suitable for all skin types including sensitive skins. Rose is balancing, soothing, calming, anti-inflammatory and harmonising but is also stimulating, astringent, toning, cleansing and antibacterial.

A strong infusion of Rose Petals helps to treat blackheads, acne and pimples. Due to their toning and mildly astringent properties, Rose petals are good for cleansing. It is precisely why I use a Rose Petal infusion in Sweet Cheeks natural face wash.

Dry, mature and sensitive skins will love the balancing and rejuvenating effects that roses can have on our skin – I have used Rose water and Rose essential oils in A Little Lift natural serum – which hydrates and moisturises dry and mature skins.

Rose water is a major feature of Freshen Up toner – it hydrates the skin and at the same time tones it. It also makes a great pick-me up due to its refreshing aroma. A few spritzes are enough to lift you from an afternoon slump!

So like its relative, the Rosehip, the Rose is another of those amazingly versatile natural raw materials which I come back to time and time again in my natural and organic skin care formulas.

Oh yes, and did I mention they smell wonderful too!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2653173747270507713.post-45096704423851841982010-10-21T20:06:00.002+01:002010-10-21T20:31:43.451+01:00Rosehips - A Natural Skin Care Phenomenon

It is one of those amazing, wonder ingredients that defies explanation.

A natural raw material that is found in hedgerows up and down the British Isles that, when used correct can benefit so many skin types and skin conditions - and thus is found in some of the best natural skin care products you can buy.

Step forward and take a bow, the humble Rosehip.

Rosehip is a key ingredient in many organic skincare products – and for good reason! Most commercial rosehip oil now comes from Chile and grows wild in the Southern Andes. Its Latin name is Rosa rubiginosa and in South America its referred to as Rosa Mosqueta.

The oil is produced from the seeds of the Rosehip and it is the only vegetable oil which contains natural tretinoin - the acid form of vitamin A which means it is very good for treating a wide range of skin complaints and can help repair damaged skin - from spots and acne, through to repairing damaged skin. It is also good when used in natural face oils - balancing oily skin, helping to refine pores, to smoothes fine lines and wrinkles – a truly wonderfully versatile ingredient.

Rosehip is also a brilliant source of Omega 3 and 6 – and these give the oil its regenerative properties and it is widely acknowledged as being one of the best anti-wrinkle oils available.

It is a soft and smooth oil which means it’s great for people with sensitive skin as it won’t irritate. It is quickly absorbed into the skin and doesn’t leave an oily residue – so it’s perfect when used in natural face oils – and is suitable for all skin types – even oily skins and it can also help refine pores.

Its ability to heal skin is well documented – it can help heal burns – including sunburn; it can also help with pigmentation, wrinkles, acne, eczema and psoriasis – it is so versatile and so effective – it’s a bit like a superfood for our skin. Look out for products that contain vitamins A and E with Rosehip as these are especially healing.

I love it so much – so it’s no surprise that it features in many of my products including my Thirsty Work natural moisturiser and Perfect Pores natural serum. It also plays a starring role in both of my luxurious natural face oils – Balanced & Beautiful and Repair & Renew – which sink quickly into your skin leaving it looking radiant & healthy.

It’s got to be one of my favourite raw materials – simply because it is so versatile and benefits all skin types and conditions in so many different ways. Rosehip, you are simply remarkable!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2653173747270507713.post-27234488458748943192010-08-28T10:00:00.052+01:002010-08-28T10:00:03.733+01:00Does Your Natural Skin Care Product Pass The Acid Test?

We all know the importance of keeping our body hydrated. We can keep our skin hydrated by keeping our body hydrated, making sure we drink at plenty of natural mineral water as well as cutting down on substances that act as natural dehydrators – such as caffeine, sugary drinks and alcohol.

But we can also keep our skin hydrated by using natural skin care products contains an ingredient that does three important things - add moisture, lock in moisture and hold moisture. That ingredient, is Hyaluronic Acid.

When our skin is parched and thirsty, we can feel weak, dizzy, lethargic and tired. It’s the same thing for our skin - when it is dehydrated it can look dry and flaky. The skin on our face – most notably on our cheeks can look like very fine silvery-white lines – a bit like an onion. Dehydrated skin can look dull and lack that healthy glow.

For an instant boost of hydration try using a refreshing natural toner – spritz it over your face and you’ll instantly feel like less parched – and it will help make you feel more awake but make sure the toner doesn’t contain alcohol as this can end up drying out your skin. Look out for natural toners that contain organic flower waters like Rose Water and Orange Blossom water. Freshen Up is my natural toner that really keeps my skin looking and feeling fresh.

The one raw material that seems to be THE beauty buzz words of the moment is Hyaluronic Acid. It appears in so many different skin care formulas – from big manufacturers like L’Oreal to smaller niche brands like Angela Langford – Hyaluronic Acid is a key ingredients that we should look out for – but what does it really do and how does it work?

The press have termed Hyaluronic Acid as “The Fountain of Youth”. Hyaluronic Acid – referred to on a cosmetics label as Sodium Hyaluronate – is a substance that occurs naturally in the human body. It is what gives our skin volume and this volume is associated with youth and young, healthy skin. As we get older the levels of naturally occurring Hyaluronic Acid diminish in our bodies and with that our skin loses its volume and plumpness. When our skin becomes damaged – for example if we get sunburnt, our skin stops producing as much Hyaluronic Acid.

The reason Hyaluronic Acid helps keeps our skin plump is that it can hold more water than most other large molecules – it acts a bit like a natural sponge – it can absorb and retain a thousand times its own weight in water which makes it a superb skin hydrator. These hydrating properties help plump up the skin – so wrinkles are evened and smoothed out.

By using organic hand creams, serums and other natural skin care products that contain Hyaluronic Acid we can increase the levels of Hyaluronic Acid in our skin as it can penetrate into our skin and help plump up our skin.

You’ll find Hyaluronic Acid in the following organic skin care products: Perfect Pores, A Little Lift, Thirsty Work and Balancing Act.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2653173747270507713.post-79272483497437540172010-08-24T20:11:00.000+01:002010-08-24T20:11:42.438+01:00For the Best Natural Skin Care - Clean Up Your Act

When it comes to cleansing it isn’t a question of one size fits all – we should select our natural cleansers based on our skin type and condition and also the time of year.

Facial cleansing is one natural skin care routine that we should all – and I mean everyone – take care over. After all, what is the point in slathering our faces with lotions and potions aimed at healing, repairing, rejuvenating and keeping our skin in tip top condition – if we put them on dirty skin?

If your skin feels dry, parched, dehydrated, looks decidedly lack-lustre – or if you wear foundation and make-up - then opt for a rich, cleansing balm that will thoroughly cleanse your skin of daily dirt and remove make-up. A cleansing balm will both clean your skin and it will also leave it feeling super silky soft and give you a healthy glow.

Clean Sweep is my natural and organic luxury cleansing balm – I call it luxury because it contains some super special ingredients and when you use it, your skin feels like it’s had a really luxurious facial treatment! It also smells divine thanks to the pure essential oils of Chamomile, Lemon, Cypress and Eucalyptus. The product is very rich so you only need a small amount and because it contains lots of skin loving oils, it is important to wash the balm off with a cleansing cloth; preferably a muslin cloth as this acts as a gentle exfoliator, helping to rid your skin of dead, dull skin.

If you prefer a facial wash make sure you avoid products with skin-stripping alcohol and harsh detergents like Sodium Lauryl Sulphate and never, ever use soap. These ingredients can irritate our skin, strip it of its natural oils and leave it with that horribly tight feeling. Instead look for natural facial washes that are kind and gentle and can be used by all skin types. Look out for natural skin care products that contain Jojoba oil or Castor oil – when used in cleansers, these oils bind with the dirt and removes it.

Sweet Cheeks is a mild and gentle face wash that is gentle enough to be used twice a day – in the morning and at night. I find that Men prefer using a facial wash to any other kind of cleanser – after all it can be used in the shower so it’s a very convenient cleanser when time really is tight. It contains Papaya extract which helps balance our skin – it stabilizes oily sections and exfoliates dry patches.

Sweet Cheeks will remove daily dirt and grime and will even remove foundation but it will not remove eye make-up and mascara. As the skin is so delicate around our eyes, I would recommend using an oil based cleanser as you can gently wipe away your make-up without dragging or pulling the skin around your eyes. You also need to use oils that are soft and gentle that won’t irritate your skin – even if it’s on the sensitive side.

Clean Sweep is good but if your skin is oilier or perhaps in the summer when you’re looking for something lighter, go for something like I Can See Clearly Now. It’s very gentle but so effective – it will even remove water proof mascara. Although I call it an eye make-up remover it can be used as an all over facial cleanser. It happens to also smell wonderful and thanks to the organic Argan oil it is also nourishing and will help keep the area around your eyes soft and supple.

It really doesn’t take an age to keep your skin clean – but a good cleansing routine will really improve the look and feel of your skin – clean skin looks healthier, radiant and more youthful.

So a few minutes cleaning a day will really help keep the signs of ageing at bay!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2653173747270507713.post-12124722645403299662010-08-18T19:33:00.000+01:002010-08-18T19:33:44.423+01:00Brush, Buff & Butter Up Your Beautiful Body

When it comes to good natural skin care routines, we always tend to focus on our faces. For a lot of the year we tend to cover up our lovely legs, sexy shoulders, boobs, bums and tums – in fact, as much of our body as is possible! But it really is very easy to keep your body not only glowing, but gleaming and totally glamorous by following these simple body beautiful tips…
It’s not just our hair that benefits for daily brushing – our bodies love it too. Spend a few minutes every day and your body will be forever thankful – it will quickly become part of your daily routine. Brushing gives your body a circulation boost – it encourages detoxification so can be useful in combating cellulite. There are one or two easy rules when it comes to body brushing…

Always use upward strokes. From the bottom of your body brush towards your heart; and brush your arms upwards towards your shoulders.

Look for scrubs that contain natural a combination of exfoliating ingredients such as sugar or Sea Salt with softening and soothing Vegetable Oils like Rice Bran & Avocado.

Sometimes our body’s need a little more than a lotion to hydrate our parched skin. A body butter or a rich body butter cream can work wonders to transform our limbs from flakey, scaly snake-like skin to silky smooth velvet. I turn to an ultra hydrating body butter cream when my skin is feeling particularly thirsty or I’m looking for that ultra smooth and velvety finish to show off my pins. Look for products that contain Shea, Cocoa, Mango or Avocado Butters – or preferably a combination of these rich and luxurious ingredients.

Body Butter Creams and Natural Body Butters tend to be more nourishing and healing than standard body lotions. Shea Butter is a great moisturiser but it does so much more – it can help heal a range of skin irritations and complaints – from itchy rashes through to helping prevent and improving stretch marks! In fact in West Africa where the tree originates from, Shea Butter is traditional slathered onto pregnant bellies to help prevent stretch marks. Cocoa Butter acts as a barrier to prevent moisture loss and is also good for softening rough skin patches.

I love using a luxury natural Body Butter Cream when I come out of the bath or shower and my body is warm and ready to receive these nourishing, healing and hydrating natural and organic raw materials.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2653173747270507713.post-56285500336795797872010-08-10T10:00:00.000+01:002010-08-10T10:00:02.662+01:00Cleanse, Quench, Protect, Rest and Enjoy!

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">I’m often asked when talking about natural skin care and organic skin care products, whether there are any quick fixes for keeping our skin looking and feeling great.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">I’m not so sure these are “quick” fixes but they are my top 5 tips for keeping your skin in tip top condition...

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">1. <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">Cleanse, cleanse and cleanse again

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">Cleansing is one of the most important elements of a good skin care routine – but is something that we tend to overlook. Sometimes we rush this essential skin care routine step – and focus on moisturizing. In fact, good cleansing with a natural cleanser is key to good skin and we should thoroughly cleanse our skin twice a day – once in the morning and again at night; and never, ever go to bed with your make-up!

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">Cleansing removes dirt, debris, make up and all the impurities from the day. It leaves our skin ready and prepared to receive products that keep our skin hydrated and in good condition. If we apply natural and organic skin care products onto skin that is dirty, we are not giving the products the chance to really work and be effective.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">2. Quench your Skin’s thirst

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">When our skin is dehydrated it can feel parched, tight and sometimes flaky and it lacks that radiant, plump glow that hydrated skin has. It’s important that we hydrate our skin internally as well as externally.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">We all know we should drink at least 8 large glasses of natural mineral water every day – more if we’re exercising. But we should also select natural and organic skin care products that hydrate your skin and keep it in tip top condition. Products that contain natural mineral water will help hydrate your skin but other naturally active raw materials can help keep moisture in our skin.

A good night’s sleep really helps keep our skin looking and feeling radiant, glowing and healthy.
