Don't Pop Pills - Feed Your Skin!

Vitamin tablets have graced the shelves of our bathroom cabinets for decades. We all know the benefits of eating a varied diet rich in fruit and vegetables that are packed full of vital vitamins & minerals.

These same vitamins are also important raw materials that are found in natural and organic skin care products and they can really help improve the way our skin looks and feels. By choosing natural skincare products that are rich in vitamins & minerals we can help keep our skin looking healthy, radiant and this can help delay the signs of ageing.

Here’s my jargon-free simple lowdown on why vitamins and minerals are good for our body and our skin and which to look out for when choosing your natural and organic skin care products.

Vitamin C – (latin name, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate)
Vitamin C is one of the most popular vitamins that we take. It’s known as a good supplement to help ward off colds, coughs and other winter bugs and it is found naturally in citrus fruits, red, orange and yellow coloured fruit and vegetables such as peppers and apricots. Vitamin C is such a good fighter of bugs because of its antioxidant properties. When we apply Vitamin C to our skin, the same antioxidant properties can also help fight off wrinkles and other signs of ageing. When used at levels of 10% Vitamin C is said to have a lightening effect on the skin; making it good for treating age spots.

Vitamin A – (latin name, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate)
Within many natural and organic skincare products, Vitamin A is another vital antioxidant. It plays an important role in making new skin cells; it is highly nourishing, counteracts inflamed skin and protects our skin from harmful and damaging free radicals. It also helps prevent skin disorders, increases blood flow and cell turnover causing dry skin to be replaced with younger-looking smooth skin. It also helps protect our skin against sunburn.

Vitamin E – (latin name, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate)
Like A & C, Vitamin E is another powerful and important antioxidant used in natural skincare products. Due to its strong antioxidant properties, it helps prevent wrinkles, stimulates blood circulation in our skin and regulates our skin’s elasticity. Vitamin E penetrates into our skin and absorbs damaging free radicals (these occur in the environment and they harm and damage our skin – causing wrinkles and other signs of premature ageing.

Vitamin B5 – (latin name, Panthenol)
Used in natural and organic skin care products, Vitamin B5 is an effective moisturiser that also reduces the damaging effects of sunlight. Vitamin B5 is also anti-inflammatory – so it soothes our skin, particularly when it is inflamed and irritated. These qualities make it an ideal ingredient to use in shaving products (and dare I say, that’s exactly why I’ve used it in my one of my men's natural skincare products, Save Our Skin!)
